Custom Elevators

Gillespie designs and manufactures an extensive range of custom elevators to accommodate virtually any size, capacity, opening, and configuration requirement. Fully compliant with all applicable codes (e.g., ADA and ASME/ANSI A17.1) and available for all standard loading classes, our custom elevator systems can be engineered for the most space-constricted areas, such as multiple-stop elevators with 8″–12″ pits that use our patented Shallow Pit Safety System and elevators requiring as little as 8’5″ of overhead (the vertical distance from the floor level of the uppermost stop to the lowest obstruction in the hoistway).

Examples of Gillespie custom elevators include:

custom elevators

Passenger Elevators.

SHALLOW PIT (8” – 12”) and LIMITED OVERHEAD (8’ 6”) PASSENGER ELEVATORS

These are fully-functioning elevators – their appearance and functionality are indistinguishable from other passenger elevators. These elevators are ADA compliant.

The patented Gillespie Shallow Pit Safety System creates the required refuge space beneath the elevator for maintenance and inspection. This secure refuge area results from electrically operated bumper devices that are designed to support the full weight of the elevator. The bumpers are located an ample distance above the actual pit floor to provide the required workspace. A shallow pit elevator will require a variance.

We can design and manufacture this type of elevator for practically any size or capacity as well as for multiple stops and openings on three sides. If you would like examples of elevators with different sizes, capacities, number/orientation of stops, suitable for hospital gurneys or if you require AutoCAD drawings, please contact us.

Similarly, utilizing our Limited Overhead Safety System we can design elevators for limited or restricted overhead situations. With as little as 8’ 6” of floor to ceiling distance at the uppermost level, we can supply a fully functioning elevator.

We can also combine the technologies for shallow pit / limited overhead situations.

Freight Elevators.

SHALLOW PIT (8” – 12”) and LIMITED OVERHEAD (8’ 6”) FREIGHT ELEVATORS

These are fully-functioning elevators – their appearance and functionality are indistinguishable from other freight elevators.

Sidewalk Elevators.

The country’s largest manufacturer of custom sidewalk elevators, Gillespie designs three basic models, all of which feature: sidewalk door with drainage, all-metal, fireproof construction, basement doors with electromechanical interlocks and portable push-button control station. Primarily used for service (e.g., moving freight, stock, dumpsters, etc.) to grade or above grade to truck level and thereby functioning as a dock lift. Our sidewalk elevators can also function as a freight elevator with riders if there are multiple stops below grade.

Manlifts/Special Purpose Personnel Elevators.

We provide custom and standard manlifts in any capacity, material, and size, for a myriad of applications. Our two basic models support a variety of situations and requirements, including: low- to high-rise applications; low- to high-speed operation; defined landing locations; and open shafts.

Residential Elevators.

Gillespie does not mass produce residential elevators. We design and manufacture elevators according to your expectations. This can include the design and architecture of the elevator cab and hoist way, as well as the materials used. From various metals to exotic woods, almost anything is possible when designing a custom residential elevator with Gillespie.

Some common designs for custom residential elevators include birdcage elevators and panoramic designs. Nearly any idea for an elevator can be realized.

Rooftop-Helipad Elevators.

Gillespie offers a full range of Rooftop and Helipad elevators.  These are fully-functioning elevators – their appearance and functionality are indistinguishable from other passenger or freight elevators. The passenger version can be designed to be completely ADA compliant.

We can design and manufacture this type of elevator for practically any size or capacity as well as for multiple stops and openings on three sides.

If you would like examples of elevators with different sizes, capacities or number of stops, suitable for hospital gurneys or if you require AutoCAD drawings, please contact us.

Shipboard Elevators.

These are fully-functioning elevators – their appearance and functionality are indistinguishable from other passenger or freight elevators even though they are designed for special conditions.

We can design and manufacture this type of elevator for practically any size or capacity as well as for multiple stops and openings on three sides. If you would like examples of elevators with different sizes, capacities, number/orientation of stops or if you require AutoCAD drawings or specifications, please contact us.

Similarly, we can design elevators for limited pit depth (8” – 12”) or restricted overhead situations. With as little as 8’ 5” of floor to ceiling distance at the uppermost level, we can supply a fully functioning elevator. If necessary, we can combine the technologies for shallow pit / limited overhead situations.

LULA Elevators.

Gillespie no longer manufactures LULA’s. In our experience they are not robust enough to handle the amount of use they actually experience. They are almost always used much more than originally intended.

We prefer to manufacture true elevators using our Shallow Pit Safety System when there are limitations to the depth of the pit. We can design for as little as an 8” pit.

We also have a Limited Overhead Safety System which allows us to fit a passenger or freight elevator into a space with as little as 8’ 6” of overhead. We can design these elevators in any size or capacity. Obviously, these elevators require a variance.

If space is not as limited, we can design and manufacture a passenger elevator that requires only a 32” deep pit and 10’ 9” of overhead, which provides both the bottom of car and top of car refuge space, required by code, and therefore does NOT require a variance.
